Description
This month, knit up a pair of handwarmers with thumb gussets in stranded colorwork. This basic pattern will fit most women's medium to large hands. If you have small hands, removing eight stitches (4 from the back of the hand, and 4 from the palm) will decrease the circumference by about an inch. Try on the hand warmer when you're close to the thumb gusset to check the height. Stop increasing when your gusset meets the thumb/palm divide.
Begin the cuff with a knitted cast on in a contrasting color. The knitted cast on is slightly stretchier than a conventional long-tailed cast on. After just one round of ribbing, switch to the main color. Chart A is used for the back of the hand, chart B is the thumb gusset, and chart C is for the palm of the hand. Because I like the line formed along the sides of the gusset by lifted increases, that's the option I chose for this project.
Notes:
- Use highly contrasting colors for best results.
- The main color requires approximately 20 grams, which is most of your ball. To make a matching headband, you will need to purchase additional yarn of the main color.
