Description
Inspired by Latvian mittens, this month's project is a lined eyeglasses case. A Turkish cast on is used for the base and the curved top portion is worked flat. Seaming and steeking are not necessary for the project! The trickiest part is sewing the lined case to the curved metal clasp.
After inserting the lining and sewing it to the top of the case, the case is basted in position to the clasp by whip stitching all the way around the clasp, about every 1/2 inch.
Attaching to the Clasp:
- Cut and sew the lining with right sides together. Fold over the top curved edges about 1/4" and press down. Press side seams to one side, and bottom seam up.
- Insert lining into case. Pin to glasses case and sew lining to case with running stitch.
- Line up center of medallian with center of clasp -- between the two ball fasteners. Baste case to metal clasp using whip stitch beginning and ending at top center. Leave long thread tails without knotting the ends.
- Thread sewing needle with long piece of thread, and knot both ends together making a double strand. Insert into lining at top so that it will be tucked inside clasp. To start, bring the needle down between the lining and knitted case about 1/4 inch, then out the lining side.
- Insert the needle 1/16" below, going through the case and up through the center hole.
- Next, insert the needle into the next hole and down through the case about 1/4" from the top. Work right to left, or left to right... whichever is more comfortable for you.
- Insert the needle again 1/16" below your current position, then back up through the same hole you just came from.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 all the way around, sewing across hinge area with small running stitches to reinforce the sides.
