I’ve always been a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal—but even the simplest wardrobe can benefit from a little lift. That was the spark behind the Floating Diamonds Poncho: a light, wear-anywhere layer that adds softness, warmth, and just the right hint of elegance—without ever feeling fussy.
Think of it like a wrap, but better. No slipping off your shoulders, no constant adjusting—just a front-opening poncho that drapes with ease. It’s the perfect piece for cool summer evenings, breezy autumn mornings, or overly air-conditioned rooms where a little extra warmth goes a long way.
✨ Why Alpaca?
For this project, I was looking for a yarn that felt both light and indulgent—and alpaca was just right. It’s warm for its weight, softly fluffy, and carries a quiet kind of luxury. Knit on size 10 needles, the lace pattern works up quickly in an easy-to-memorize repeat.
My first version was made with Hedgehog Fibres Alpaca Boucle, and I’m currently working on another in Cirro—a brushed alpaca blend with a cotton core. Cirro adds a delicate halo and just enough structure, giving the poncho both movement and body.
✨ A Play of Texture
To complement the airy lace, I added bands of structured slip stitch in Huck and Rae’s hand-painted fingering-weight yarn. The contrast in texture adds both visual interest and dimension—like frame and fabric working together.
Because the lace and slip-stitch panels behave so differently during blocking, I knit the center bands separately and put the shoulder stitches on holders. After blocking the lace panels (worked from side to center), I was able to adjust the slip-stitch bands to match perfectly. A clean mattress stitch, joining the lace bind-off to the band selvedge, brought everything together with a tidy finish.
✨ Letting Design Meet Function
Sometimes the yarn tells me what it wants to be. But this time, it was the need for a light, functional layer that sparked the idea. I wanted something that could transition between seasons, elevate an everyday outfit, and feel both cozy and considered. Floating Diamonds has quickly become a wardrobe staple—and I hope it becomes one of yours, too.
We’ve created a special collection of kits featuring nine brand-new colorways (in limited quantities)—each combining Cirro’s featherlight softness with Huck and Rae’s luminous, hand-dyed hues. The result is a poncho that’s as fun to knit as it is to wear.
